展覧会で展示する予定の「狐火と葛の葉」の絵の一部で、葛の葉を書いている部分です。服のデザインは文楽や歌舞伎での狐の服を引用しました。
出来上がりが楽しみ。

This part of my painting “Foxfire and Kuzunoha” depicts the Kuzunoha.
The clothing design is inspired by costumes worn by fox characters in Bunraku and Kabuki.

小泉八雲氏の『妖魔詩話』に登場する蝶に強く心を奪われ、さっそく描いてみました。
原画で蝶の模様部分を目で描くことが面白いなと思います。
寺田寅彦氏による『妖魔詩話―小泉八雲秘稿畫本』の存在を知り、学びの幅がさらに広がったことも興味深い発見でした。

I was deeply captivated by the butterfly that appears in Lafcadio Hearn’s Goblin Poetry and was inspired to paint it right away.
I found it particularly interesting to depict the butterfly’s patterns using eyes in the original painting.
It was also a fascinating discovery to learn about Goblin Poetry: The Secret Illustrated Manuscript of Lafcadio Hearn by Torahiko Terada, which has broadened my perspective even further.

Blue Butterfly

青い蝶は、一度だけ現れた。 誰もそのときのことをはっきりとは覚えていない。
見た人は、たしかにいた。 けれど、描こうとすると形が曖昧になる。
いま残っているのは、 そのとき胸が少しだけ温かくなったという記憶だけだ。
— “輪郭のない記憶ほど、深く染みている。”

The blue butterfly appeared only once. No one clearly remembers that moment. There were people who saw it, surely. But when they try drawing it, its shape becomes vague. What remains now is only the memory of a slight warmth in the chest at that time. — “Memories without outlines seep the deepest.”

二匹のカタツムリがいた。一匹の殻は右巻き。もう一匹の殻は左巻き。この二種類のカタツムリが出会う時、模様の理が暴れ出し、殻の模様の中の天候はいつも大荒れをする。こうなってくると夜中でもピカピカと激しい雷で周りが明るくなるくらい。溜まった雨は美しい海になった。

There were two snails: one with a right-coiling shell and one with a left-coiling shell. When they met, their shell patterns went wild and a storm brewed inside. Even at night, lightning would flash and the rain would fill their shells into a beautiful sea.

TITLE: Chilly

彼は寒がっていた。
胸の中にあるとわからないからと、自分の心臓を外に出して抱えている。
鼓動より、ぬくもりのほうが安心するらしい。 理由はよくわからないけど。
けれど、それを抱いていると、風の冷たさを少し忘れられるという。
— “見せるためじゃない、あたためるために。”

He was cold.
Not knowing it was inside his chest, he took out his own heart and held it in his arms.
It seems that warmth, not the beating, brings him comfort.
I don’t really know why. But holding it like that, he says the wind feels a little less cruel.
— “Not to show it— but to keep it warm.”

アカハラキツツキがシマウマのお尻の上にのり、小さい声で話した。あまりにも声が小さいのでシマウマが振り向き聞いてみた。
「なにか言った？」
アカハラキツツキは頷いて
「ここから物語は始まるよ。」と言った。

A red-bellied woodpecker perched quietly on the zebra’s back.
The zebra turned around, sensing a whisper.
“Did you say something?”
The woodpecker nodded.
“Yes,” it said. “This is where the story begins.”

TITLE: Elegant Snail

この生き物は、自分の殻の中に、明かりをつけたり消したりする。部屋を明るく、という話ではない。
見るという行為の、ほうだ。
誰かに注がれた視線が、まぶしいときがある。
逆に、ほとんど暗闇のような目もある。
彼女は、そこを自由に調整できる。
見ることに、ほんの少しのやさしさがあってもいい。
—
"明かりをつけて、何を見よう。消して、何を守ろう。"

This creature turns a light on and off inside her shell.
It's not about brightening a room.
It's about the act of seeing.
Sometimes, the gaze of another can be blinding.
And sometimes, there are eyes like near darkness.
She can adjust the light freely.
Maybe, there could be a little gentleness in the way we look.

"Turn on the light—what do you wish to see?
Turn it off—what do you hope to protect?"

TITLE: Gorilla Fatima’s Eye

その目は、もとは壁についていた。 誰かが見つけ、誰かが触れ、いつの間にか生き物の手に取りついた。
手のひらの奥で、それはまばたきをしない。 まぶしさを感じない代わりに、忘れることもない。
見つめ返してくるわけではないが、 見たものを全部記録している気がする。
— “これは目か、それとも証拠か。”

The eye was once part of a wall. Someone found it. Someone touched it. And somehow, it ended up on a creature’s hand.
Deep in its palm, the eye never blinks. It doesn’t feel brightness— but neither does it forget.
It doesn’t look back at you. Yet it feels as if everything it sees is being recorded.
— "Is this an eye, or is it evidence?"
